Net Zero Pathway

As a responsible operator, we aim to take the necessary measures to reduce our environmental impact. We have set a target of reaching net zero emissions for Scope 1, 2 and 3 for the entire Group by 2050. To meet this ambition, we developed a Net Zero Pathway focusing on assessing and baselining our energy use, engaging and educating our colleagues, and investing in improvements to our estate.

Assessing consumption

To implement an effective decarbonisation strategy, we first have to understand our emissions profile. PRISM are smart-sensing devices installed at our 40 highest energy consuming sites in the UK, capturing data from every asset that is plugged in at these venues and allowing for a highly detailed understanding of energy use. We also completed Scope 1 and 2 emissions baselining across the rest of our UK portfolio and at all venues in Spain. Scope 3 emissions are the largest and most complex area of most companies’ carbon footprints, and we have commenced an in-depth Scope 3 assessment of our operations.

Investing in improvements

By assessing the data collected, as well as conducting net zero audits of key venues, we have been able to identify opportunities to reduce carbon emissions. We have planned and commenced a host of initiatives which will reduce emissions across our operations. We have signed a power purchase agreement in the UK, we installed LED lighting at the majority of our venues to reduce energy use, and we are upgrading from old equipment by installing more energy efficient models when a replacement is required.

Engaging colleagues

Behavioural change will be critical in reducing our carbon footprint. It is therefore crucial that we bring our colleagues along on our Net Zero Pathway, engaging and educating them on what we are trying to achieve and how to reduce energy consumption. We created a cultural and behavioural strategy, though which there are multiple touchpoints for our colleagues to engage with the Net Zero Pathway. We appointed Rank Planet Champions in every UK venue, provide access to a platform with real-time energy use data in PRISM venues, launched energy use awareness campaigns, and provide information through quarterly newsletters, annual surveys, and our Rank Planet Hub intranet page.

Target setting

We have set two net zero targets in line with our decarbonisation ambitions. We aim to be net zero by 2050 and intend on disclosing an SBTi-aligned plan for reaching net zero by 2050, or earlier if possible. To ensure we are progressing in step with our own expectations, as well as those of our stakeholders, we have set an interim net zero target for Scope 1 and 2 emissions and selected Scope 3 emissions in the Group for 2035.

Our net zero waterfall chart demonstrates how we are progressing towards our targets. As we implement further decarbonisation initiatives, we continually assess our progress. The chart below represents our carbon footprint at the end of 2023/24, and the emissions reduction programmes planned to take us to net zero emissions by 2050. The updating of our net zero waterfall chart is an iterative process; we take into account everything actioned to date, ensure that measures are still in the correct order to be most effective, and adjust the plan accordingly.

Oversight

To reach our stated goals, we have a robust governance structure in place to guide the business on its Net Zero Pathway. Our CEO has overarching responsibility for our Net Zero Pathway, and the Board maintains oversight for the progress made through the ESG & Safer Gambling Committee. The Net Zero Working Group (‘NZWG’) is responsible for operationalising our Net Zero Pathway. The NZWG is chaired by the Director of IR, ESG and Treasury, who reports directly to the CEO and ESG & Safer Gambling Committee.

The NZWG manages all decarbonisation initiatives across the UK business, but also is kept appraised of all initiatives in the Spanish locations. The NZWG is comprised of key individuals from across the Group, including the heads of the property and procurement teams, as well as the lead for the decarbonisation initiatives in Spain. Our external consultants in the UK and Spain have provided support to the business on gathering energy data, carbon reporting and reduction initiatives.
